Life and Debt Soundtrack

Life and Debt is a feature-length documentary which addresses the impact of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and current globalization policies on a developing country such as Jamaica. The LIFE and DEBT soundtrack, released by Tuff Gong, is available in the SOUNDTRACK section of your local record store. Profits from soundtrack sales will be donated to URGE, a non-profit organization founded by Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. URGE is devoted to bringing relief and hope to suffering and underprivileged people around the world.

The title song from the film's soundtrack, "Life and Debt" is also included on Mutabaruka's first studio album since 1994, Life Squared, released on Heartbeat Records.

Tuff Gong and Disney join forces

Tuff Gong Caribbean Distributors has reached an agreement with Hollywood and Walt Disney Records for the exclusive distribution of their catalog throughout the Caribbean islands.  The Disney license allows Tuff Gong to carry the music from classic family films such as The Lion King and The Little Mermaid as well as current Disney phenomenon Hannah Montana.  As of July 11, 2009 three of the top twenty albums on Billboard’s pop album chart hail from Disney, including country superstars Rascal Flatts and international pop sensations, The Jonas Brothers. The Hannah Montana movie soundtrack has already hit #1 on the Top Country Album chart and the Billboard 200.

At a time when all of the major record labels complain of dismal numbers, Disney artists are consistently posting high sales figures.  Miley Cyrus and her alter ego, Hannah Montana, have sold more than three million albums in the last 12 months.  The Hannah Montana movie soundtrack has sold 1.2 million copies in 2009.  The Jonas Brothers’ last two albums debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, and they show no sign of slowing down now that they have their own hit series on the Disney cable channel.

In addition to being the legendary home of reggae music, Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong International has been a leading entertainment distributor in the Caribbean for more than two decades.  Music industry titan Universal Music Group, home to superstar artists Kanye West, Mariah Carey, U2, and Black Eyed Peas, is also distributed by Tuff Gong in the region.  Tuff Gong is wasting no time getting Disney into the marketplace.  Along with traditional music outlets, the company plans to make the products available in specialty venues, including movie theatres and children’s apparel shops.  Wholesale inquiries should be directed to local Tuff Gong offices throughout the Caribbean or Miami.

Tuff Gong makes reggae donation to National Library

The Marley-owned Tuff Gong International on Wednesday donated a series of products to the National Library of Jamaica (NLJ).

The presentation was made by family matriarch Rita Marley at the NLJ's East Street headquarters.

Most of the items are recordings by reggae superstar Bob Marley who died in 1981. They include Legend, the posthumous compilation of his biggest hit songs, that has sold over 10 million units, and a copy of the Bob Marley Interviews which the singer did with Radio Jamaica broadcaster Neville Willoughby during the early 1970s.

Recordings by his sons Ziggy, Stephen and Damian and a DVD of the Marley charity event, Africa Unite, were also presented.

Maureen Webster-Prince, head of the NLJ's audio-visual department, said the gesture was timely.

"For the first time, the National Library seems to be developing a comprehensive collection of Marley recordings. What we had was very minimal," she told The Gleaner.

This was the second presentation by the Marleys to the NLJ. The first was in 1989, when vinyl copies of Legend and Conscious Party (a Grammy-winning album by Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers) were donated.

Lorna Wainwright, a senior manager at Tuff Gong, described Wednesday's dedication as an "important step".

"We hope other artistes will come forward and do the same for the National Library," she said.

The NLJ was established in 1979.
